Designate a large square, measuring at least 30 feet by 30 feet, on the field. Place three defenders in the square and four attackers along each side of the square, with the attacking groups named A, B, C and D. Each attacking group has one ball. When the coach calls out a letter, the respective attacking group races into the box and attempts to evade the defenders and score across the opposite side of the square.
The three defenders must work together to try and stop them from scoring, with play ending on a tackle or turnover. Once play stops, the coach calls out another attacking group, and the defenders must brace for another immediate assault.
Designed to teach young rugby players evasive skills, tiger tails requires each player to wear a tail, which can be a plastic flag or simple piece of cloth tucked into the back of his shorts.
When you look at creating rugby drills for young kids, you need to remember this. Kids at this age love exploring and finding out more about the world around them.
Almost everything that they get in contact with is totally new to them. With rugby, it is exactly the same. They would sometimes have watched a few minutes on television or at a local club or school, but probably got distracted after a few minutes….
You need to look at the game in a whole different light and see how you can keep it interesting for everyone there. A lot of what I mentioned above might sound odd at first, but trust me, it works. I have had the pleasure of training young kids for a number of years and applying these principles create players that love the game and develop a good skills base. As mentioned in point 4 above it is important to mix it up.
Rules as for End Ball but now players are permitted to run with the ball. The aim of the game is for the team in possession to ground the ball on or over the opposition try line. The game starts with a free pass from the centre.
Arrange the players into four groups, one group at each corner of the grid in a single file line facing centre. Place a ring of cones the empty nest a metre from the corner towards the centre spot. In the centre of the grid place a larger nest containing all the balls.
The game starts by the player at the front of each line running to the centre nest, collecting a ball and returning to place it in their own nest. They may then touch player two to trigger their turn as in a relay. This relay continues until one team has three balls in their nest.
